With 12 seconds left to play in Saturday's Navy-Syracuse men's lacrosse game, the Orange led Navy 12-11. When the final buzzer sounded, Navy had won 13-12.
It was one of the wildest finishes in lacrosse all season.
After the Midshipmen scored for a tie to push to a potential OT, Navy FOGO Joe Varello won a faceoff against his brother, Syracuse FOGO Danny Varello, with just over 10 seconds to play in the fourth quarter.
Joe raced toward the Syracuse goal, fought through a couple tough checks from Orange defenders, and then launched a ground ball to win the game.
It was truly an incredible goal, and a fitting end to a back-and-forth matchup between two Top 15 squads.
Just a handful of seconds earlier, trailing by one goal, Navy had forced a turnover and drove the field. The Midshipmen found space in the middle of Syracuse's defense for the equalizer from Jack Ray.
Our friends at LacrosseReference.com put together live win probability charts for each game. This one was... unique.
Navy moves to 9-4 on the season, and helps its résumé in pursuit of a potential at-large berth, while Syracuse falls to 7-5.
