For Morgan State's 1975 lacrosse team, stunning upset still resonates decades later

Jan 9, 2019

Once upon a time, Morgan State played men's lacrosse and scored a fairy-tale win over a legendary foe — a victory that, 43 years later, still resonates with the stick world. On March 8, 1975, the Bears — then the only lacrosse team from a historically black college, and one with a shoestring budget — defeated No. 1 Washington & Lee, 8-7, ending the Generals' 27-game regular-season winning streak.

NCAA rules committee recommends 60-second shot clock for men’s lacrosse

Aug 13, 2018

After years of debate, men’s lacrosse moved one step closer to adding a shot clock for the 2019 season. But support for such a measure is not unanimous.

After conducting a series of meetings from Tuesday through Thursday, the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rules Committee announced Friday that it will recommend the introduction of a visible 60-second shot clock after the offense has crossed midfield. A team will have 20 seconds to clear the ball, and if the offense retains possession off a save or a shot off the goal posts or crossbar, the clock will be reset to 60 seconds. If the 60 seconds expire without the offense taking a shot, the defense will gain possession.

Growing steadily, corrigan sports has lacrosse in its DNA

Jul 2, 2018

Walking into the offices at Corrigan Sports headquarters in Elkridge, Md., it's easy to notice the Under Armour All-American game jerseys. And the vertical Maryland Roughriders sign. Lining the walls of the office are various banners representing the events Corrigan Sports hosts — running festivals, field hockey tournaments, flag football and a handful from lacrosse events.

The banners and jerseys serve as aesthetics for the main lobby at Corrigan Sports, a sports marketing and event management company founded by Lee Corrigan in 2000, but they represent a bit more. Corrigan, the man behind it all, was born to work in the world of sports — especially in lacrosse. It’s in his blood.

Once a strength, faceoffs proved a liability for Hood men’s lacrosse in 2018

Jun 18, 2018

year ago, the Hood men’s lacrosse program was one of the best in Division III in winning faceoffs. This past spring was a quick study in reality catching up to the team.

The Blazers finished the 2018 season ranked 170th out of 239 schools in that department at 43.9 percent (165 of 376). That was a significant contrast from last year, when they ranked 15th in the nation at 64.3 percent (268 of 417) thanks to the play of Zach Kauffman (66.9 percent on 224 of 335 and 118 ground balls).

NCAA lacrosse: Injury doesn’t keep Quinlan from playing a part in James Madison’s run to title

Or ended any better.

The James Madison University senior, who plays attack for the JMU women’s lacrosse team, went down with a season-ending injury in the second game of the season back in February.

But she was still along for a magical ride as the Dukes shocked the lacrosse world by capturing the 2018 NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse championship last month.

Most importantly, between the start and end, the 2014 Wilton High graduate learned some valuable life lessons.

FOXBOROUGH — To reach its first NCAA Division 3 championship game, the Wesleyan men’s lacrosse team proved it can score in bunches, withstanding a furious comeback from top-ranked RIT to eke out a rousing 19-18 victory last Sunday, when 16 goals were scored in the game’s final 15 minutes.

A Happy Chaos When the Circus Comes to Town

The best NCAA Quarterfinal game and best atmosphere was Albany’s 15-13 victory over Denver on Saturday in Hempstead, N.Y. It clinched Albany’s first trip to Championship Weekend. There will be excitement on the menu: Albany’s fans filled two sections of Shuart Stadium despite the rain and chilly temperatures. The mind boggles at what might greet the teams on Saturday, given Albany’s campus is less than three hours from Gillette Stadium and the early weather forecast is warm but dry.

NCAA lacrosse: Buddy Carr has UMass reliving its glory days, back in the NCAA tournament

May 14, 2018

The first achievement arrived and surprised him. The other, he and his classmates had been trying to attain for years.

Very few lacrosse players from the Seacoast have enjoyed — at the Division I level — three-day stretches like the one Buddy Carr got to experience a week ago with UMass.

A senior attack, the former Exeter High School standout is headed to his first NCAA tournament. That achievement was clinched when the Minutemen (12-4) beat Towson 12-8 in the CAA final on Saturday in Amherst, Mass., the program's first league title since 2012.

"It's been a goal all four years," said Carr, who was named All-CAA first team, and leads his team in goals (36), assists (24) and points (60). "To finally be able to do that on Garber (Field) was a privilege."

That achievement came two days after a more personal one.
